The Salvation Army will be able to assist more clients with their energy bills thanks to a $50,000 check from Puget Sound Energy. The gift will go directly towards The Warm Home Fund, which has already helped more than 1,000 households pay their heating bills this year with $171,000 in voluntary contributions for Puget Sound Energy employees and customers.
The Warm Home Fund is a partnership between The Salvation Army and the utility company, created in 1982 to assist those who need help with their monthly energy bills. Since its inception, the fund has served more than 100,000 families.
The $50,000 is expected to help about 500 more customers. No ratepayer dollars fund Puget Sound Energy’s donations to the Warm Home Fund. The company encourages customers to make voluntary contributions to the fund in their bill statements.
“With the economic downturn and the continued effect of cool temperatures causing thermostats to be turned up, we are experiencing an increase in the number of people needing energy assistance,” said Lt. Cl. Doug O’Brien, divisional commander of The Salvation Army Northwest Division. “We hope those who can help will consider making a donation to The Salvation Army Warm Home Fund through their PSE bills.”
Pugest Sound Energy customer donations to the fund increased by 30 percent in January when bill payers added a contribution with their utility bill statements, which were higher than usual due to the effects of December’s cold spell on heating costs.
To donate to the Warm Home Fund, PSE customers can include donations in utility bill payments and write the amount on the bill payment stub on the line labeled, “The Salvation Army Warm Home Fund.” All donations to the program are tax deductable.
